Born on 11 July 1956 Amitav Ghosh is Famous Bangali Indian English writer.His Debut Novel was The Circle of Reason and it won the Prix Médicis étranger, one of France's top literary awards.

The river of Smoke is one of the famous novels. It is the second volume of what will be the Ibis trilogy. the story line is as follows: After the incidents on Ibis, which was caught in a storm and eventually ended up in Mauritius, but with a few passengers less, the story in this novel begins from where it left off. From the details of the changing lives and traditions of Indian migrants in Mauritius, the novel traces the fate of other characters from Ibis and describes the opium trade in China. The novel has a rich tapestry of characters from various cultural and geographical backgrounds whose common interest is trade with China. The plot is set in Fanqui town,a small strip of land used by foreigners to trade with local Chinese traders, a year before the first opium war.

Ghosh lives in New York with his wife, Deborah Baker, author of the Laura Riding biography In Extremis: The Life of Laura Riding and a senior editor at Little, Brown and Company. They have two children, Lila and Nayan. He has been a Fellow at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta. In 1999, Ghosh joined the faculty at Queens College, City University of New York, as Distinguished Professor in Comparative Literature. He has also been a visiting professor to the English department of Harvard University since 2005. Ghosh has recently purchased a property in Goa and is intending to return to India. He is working on a trilogy to be published by Penguin Books India.
